April 23, 1985 The New Coke Lesson Most People Get Wrong (Day 6 of 7)

Day 6 of our seven-part April 23 series.
April 23, 1985. Coca-Cola announces a new formula after 99 years. Seventy-nine days later they quietly bring the original back. The country had spoken. New Coke became the textbook business school case study.
Most people read it as a “never change anything” story. It is not. The actual lesson is what Coca-Cola did next — they listened to their customers, they ran both formulas side by side, and they kept what worked.
That is the sanctuary at Ruffled Feathers. We mix things up constantly. AI helps answer some of our intake calls now. We use it to draft responses, sort rescue photos, even script these very videos. Anything that frees us up to spend more time with the actual animals stays. Anything that gets in the way gets quietly retired.
The thing we never New Coke is the bird. The bird is the customer. The bird tells us what works.
Try things. Keep what works. The original formula has never been “do not change.” It has always been “the bird is the boss.”
Day 7 tomorrow closes the series. April 23, 1988, a man pedals an airplane across the Aegean. April 23, 2005, the first video ever uploaded to YouTube. The most beautiful one of the week.
