Every September, I tell this story. Twenty-five years later, that morning still knocks the wind out of me. Some years it has been too hard for me to even open. I'm telling it again this year, a piece a day over the next twelve days, leading up to the anniversary. Where I was, why I got in my truck and drove to New York, what I saw when I got there, and how a firefighter ended up spending the rest of his life saving parrots.

And this year there is something new. So many of you have asked how I am doing now, and what "live like it's September 12th" really means to me all these years later. When the story is told, I am finally going to answer.

Then it hit me: this was about the twelfth bird I'd pulled that exact mesh off of. That's not bad luck, that's a pattern. It's called erosion-control netting, the green mesh laid over fresh grass seed on hillsides and construction sites.

If you see loose netting near ponds, creeks, or parks, report it. A small call can save a dozen birds.

This is the one that still gets me. 🕊️

A tiny pigeon, frozen on a downtown sidewalk. Its parents had been killed, and it wouldn't leave them. Its wing would never heal enough to fly.

Not every rescue ends in release. But every life still has value.

I've untangled a hundred birds. This one stopped me cold. 🪿

A goose with a coarse mesh around its beak, not fishing line. Then it hit me: about the twelfth bird I'd pulled that exact stuff off of.

Not bad luck. A pattern. It's erosion-control netting.

Our Mission

At Ruffled Feathers Parrot Sanctuary, every rescue tells a story of second chances. We save parrots and wildlife, give them medical care and safe housing, and surround them with patience and love. Education is at the heart of our work because when the community understands, animals get a better shot.

These aren’t just updates. They’re raw, unfiltered moments that define sanctuary life.
One minute we’re cleaning cages. The next, we’re racing across town to untangle a squirrel from fishing line. Meanwhile, a volunteer is bottle-feeding a baby raccoon or transporting an injured hawk across the county.
The day’s plan often changes in an instant that’s rescue life. We’ve learned to laugh, cry, and hustle… sometimes all at once. And every story leaves a lesson medical, emotional, or simply this: never turn your back on a curious raccoon.

From Call to Care: How a Rescue Happens

It usually starts with a shaky voicemail at 2 a.m. or a kid with a cardboard box. From there, we move fast but always gentle.
• Triage (minutes): photos, location, species, safety check, and legal/permit needs.
• Dispatch (now): who’s closest, what gear’s needed, and the calmest driver wins.
• Capture & Stabilize (quiet): towels, crates, warm + dark = lower stress, better outcomes.
• Transport (wheels up): straight to our clinic space or partner care like Broadbent Wildlife Sanctuary.
• Care Plan (brains + heart): hydration, pain control, nutrition; parrots may stay long-term, wildlife aims for release.
• Teach & Prevent (the ripple): we share what helped fishing line cuts, window strikes, diet mistakes so the next animal doesn’t need us.

Inside the Sanctuary: Real-Life Animal Rescue, Every Day

This is where the newest rescues unfold emergency captures, late-night transports, and heart-melting reunions.
A recent favorite? A squealing baby raccoon who arrived terrified… then fell asleep inside a volunteer’s hoodie ten minutes later. Not every story ends in sunshine and snuggles some are bittersweet, some are hard to tell but each one matters. In rescue work, truth carries more weight than perfection.
