Heroes in the Classroom and on the Field: A Pigeon Rescue Story

Todays post about hawks and pigeons just got a real-life sequel and it happened at a high school baseball field of all places. Because apparently, when you rescue wildlife, the wildlife finds youeven in the middle of a game.

On my way back from Broadbent Wildlife, I made a quick stop at the high school right before the baseball team took the field. But before the first pitch was even thrown, nature decided to add a little drama to the lineup.

A hawk, likely an immature one still figuring out the hunting game, had dropped a pigeon right onto the school grounds. Thats when two quick-thinking teachers jumped into action, scooping up the dazed (but very much alive!) pigeon and making sure no further harm came its way.

Enter mejust casually stopping by, not expecting to do more wildlife rescue today, but when does that ever go as planned?

The pigeon, a tough little survivor, was pretty banged up with the talon marks right there on its back but still lucky. Likely stunned from the fall, it needs rest, warmth, and an exam to check for any hidden injuries. It didn’t like they went too deep but I got it disinfected and with foood and water for the night. Thanks to these teachers fast response, it may have a second chance now instead of becoming an easy target for another predator.

And this ties back perfectly to todays earlier post about the complex relationship between hawks and pigeons. Hawks arent villains; theyre just doing what hawks do. But not every hunt ends cleanly, and young raptors often make mistakeslike dropping their dinner mid-flight. Thats where we step in, ensuring balance in the ecosystem and giving the injured a fair shot at recovery.

So, to the two teachers who didnt hesitate to help a bird in needyou get an A+ in wildlife rescue! ??

Ill be monitoring this pigeons recovery and keeping you all posted. In the meantime, let this be a reminder that everyday heroes dont always wear capessometimes, they wear school lanyards and carry attendance sheets.
