Dog Kills Mom, 10 Orphaned Babies Left Behind: Homeowner’s Quick Action Saves Lives
It happened fast. A dog spotted a mother opossum in the yard, and within seconds, she was gone. What the homeowner didnt expect was what happened next: an orphaned baby opossums rescue unfolding right before their eyesten tiny babies, barely the size of a thumb, still clinging to their mothers body.
Opossums may not be everyone’s favorite backyard visitor, but they’re incredibly important to the ecosystem. These gentle marsupials eat thousands of ticks and pests each year and rarely carry disease. The more people know, the more they careand that awareness starts with stories like this one.
If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, remember: your quick actions can truly mean the difference between life and death for these vulnerable creatures.
? What To Do If You Find a Deceased Opossum (Especially a Mother):
Check the pouch immediately. Opossum babies can survive for up to 6 hours after the mother dies, depending on temperature and conditions. The clock is ticking, but there’s often still time.
Keep them warm. Place the whole pouch or babies in a soft cloth and keep them close to body temperature (about 99F).
Do not feed them. Giving the wrong formula or feeding too early can be fatal.
Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator ASAP. (If youre near us, weve got you covered. #BroadbentWildlife)
These ten orphans are now safe in their care. They’re fragile, but strong. Just like the people who dont hesitate to step up when wildlife needs help.
