May 1: A Journey Through Time and Feathers

Wildlife Rescue Milestones: A Decade of Sanctuary Stories

May 1 bird sanctuary stories are a cherished tradition at Ruffled Feathers Parrot Sanctuary. Each year, our Louisville wildlife center documents the inspiring tales of over 3,000 rescued animals that pass through our refuge.
A parrot sits on a timeline of historic May 1 events
As a tradition, we use May 1 to reflect on global milestones. In addition, we look back through our public Facebook postspast rescues, education efforts, and those quiet moments in the aviaries that meant the world.
These include the quiet, tender moments in the aviaries that meant the world to us and our feathered friends. It’s a day where we look back and reconnect with the heart of our mission.

Louisville’s Premier Bird Refuge: Historical Moments

1886 marked a pivotal moment in American labor history. The Haymarket Labor Movement began as workers united for an eight-hour workday. This peaceful demonstration became the foundation for what we now celebrate as International Workers’ Day.
1931 The Empire State Building Opens (New York):
Standing 102 stories tall, the worlds tallest building at the time opened to the public. A monument to ambition and engineering, it was completed ahead of schedule and under budgetsomething we wish applied to parrot aviary repairs!

945 saw significant changes in Europe. As World War II drew to a close, the fall of the Third Reich’s leadership marked the beginning of peace. Just one week later, on May 8, Europe would celebrate its liberation.
International Workers’ Day emerged as a global celebration. It honors those who fought for fair working conditions and continues to inspire modern labor rights movements worldwide.
1956: The Polio Vaccines Public Introduction: A monumental breakthrough in medical history, Jonas Salks vaccine began its widespread distribution, marking a major victory against poliomyelitis and saving countless lives.
1960: The Birth of the Laser: Theodore Maiman demonstrated the first laser, opening the door to technology that would become integral in fields from medicine to telecommunicationsa true beacon of scientific innovation!
2004 European Union Expands:
Ten new countries joined the EU in the largest single expansion of the union. This moment reshaped European diplomacy and integration for generations to come.

I need to talk more about my day to day but here is a small fraction of today. My highlight of the day. This momma had her babies in a courtyard of a hospital. There was no way out once they hatched. The first day I went and caught mom but once I moved her I noticed her babies were still hatching out. So I gave them some time and came back again today and caught her again along with all 10 of her babies. I moved them all to a nearby nursery area where they all gather that I figured she would probably head to if she wasnt trapped with babies that cant fly. It was a success and one of the good wins you hope for doing rescue. Then tonight just now I got a call about a baby opossum not doing well in somebodies shed. I wasnt even going to go because we had just gotten home and it was so late. There were protestors out between here and there and I just didnt want to deal with any of it. Something told me to go ahead tho so I went. Got there and it was no baby but I loaded him up to head home. Got home and opened his carrier up to check on him and get him some food and water. He looked up at me with his sad little eyes and reached for me with his little hands. No signs of aggression from him at all so I picked him up and snuggled him against my chest. He snuggled there comfortable as could be for a time then he took a deep breath relaxed and died there in my arms. It really sucks but I know we all tried. I also know he appreciated it. It wasnt the win you hope for with them released back out into the wild but I have to feel like it all happened for an important reason. He waited for me to give him comfort, safety, and let him know it was ok to let go that everything was going to be alright now. God speed little fella and dont go too nuts in those heavenly garbage cans. I hear they never run out of trash for the critters. ??? Good night everyone. – Brad

On my way to help a raccoon that wandered into a derby party on the snazzy side of town. Taking bets on if I get bit or not? Extra payoff for guessing the right area of the body I get bit at. ?
